Kumru

First find out about introspective.

softly cooing
round eyes
innocently searching
big in this nest
small in this world
genç çocuk
precious young
out there under the brutal sky
there will be persecution
and temptation and wickedness
but remember that
God loves you
küçük kuş
you are no longer little
but know that you are
a child of God
a peaceful soul
a dove

The Imagery

biiiiig round eyes

The Content

This piece goes in hand with Onna no Ko, having been written around August (back when I had the time to learn Turkish). I wrote this to my future self. Today is my eighteenth birthday, very fitting.

The diction I chose is not elaborate, and the flow more conversational. To capture pure simplicity, I suppose. Some day I will long for quiet life. Some day.

It is just as important to document optimism. Maybe the future me will look back on this and think myself naive, or maybe it will make the difference between moving on or stalling.

The Ghost of You

First find out about introspective.

the ghost of you
sets its eyes to the West
present in time
yet lost to the future
mothers hold on to empty bodies
while their children slip away
like moths to flames
running towards neon warfire
already the hearse awaits
someone please turn the wheel back
could I?
should I?
at the end of the world
if you carry on this way
you are never coming home
so long and goodnight

The Imagery

apparitions leave their flesh
bound for neon lights and war fire
driving the hearse

The Content

Pretty new to the Phandom. Did a mashup of The Ghost of You and Helena. In a way it progresses from pre-death to post-death. My sentiments for those studying in the US.

Everyone is hyped for graduating, but I have a sinking feeling that some of these people are.. never coming back. Not in the sense that we will no longer be in contact (come on, we are living in the year 2016 already), but that peace is not guaranteed over the next couple decades. In this chaotic day and age it happens.

I would love to turn the wheel and stop it all from happening. But could I? Should I? I best I can do is pray that God brings them home some day.

Run Run Run

First find out about introspective.

to the edge of the world
burn burn burn
the cold lifeless torment
fight fight fight
the frozen clutch closing in
try try try
to reach that distant twinkle
leave leave leave
the dead self behind
flee flee flee
from the damp spirit
break break break
the frost creeping in
pray pray pray
to remember why the flight
wade wade wade
through a viscous resistance
see see see
a glimmer through blurry sight
hear hear hear
muted ghosts through waters
feel feel feel
all there is left and
run

The Imagery

a cold spirit chases
through thick muffling fluids

The Content

Actually I think this makes for another trilogy in this order: Feel it All, Spring Nicht, Run Run Run. How strange, that I write pessimistically for dance beats and optimistically for emo ballads.

This entry makes a good wrap up. Spring Nicht makes an appearance in "to the edge of the world" and every word that suggests "cold". Feel it All is referred to at "feel feel feel / all there is left". Where it all began.

Usually I try not to repeat words, but consecutive repetition can make an exception. I particularly like the line "pray pray pray / to remember why the flight". The worst way to lose is to forget your motive. Without a reason why, no amount of opportunity can help you win.

Feel it All

First find out about introspective.

flash between heartbeats
seizurous
dare to snap heartstrings
bomb ticking
countdown
five
a tangle of wires
the red or the blue
four
a network of people
them or us
three
this is going to scar
split and frayed
two
this is going to hurt
flesh and soul
one
a severed capillary
bleeds love
zero
drained of life
turning a grey pallour
as the pulse wavers
and the lights dim
in the final scene of our
dead strobe

The Imagery

stroboscopic lights
bomb
destruction
grey
black

The Content

Got a feel of Riot Lights in this. There is even a bit of Sixx A.M. in there at "this is going to hurt", only because I listened to the album a lot at the time, along with Tokio Hotel.

I like the usage of countdown in this one. There is some kind of expectation, mixed with a little dread. It is also very visual, starting off in flashes of colour and quite a lot of red, then it just oozing away in the end to black.

This is an early entry. It is different in that the last line does not reflect the first. In fact, Dead Strobe was the original title. I never had a thing for parties or live concerts. Combining monstrously loud music with seizurously flashing lights makes a nightmarish headache.

女の子

First find out about introspective.

onna no ko
engulfed in flames
as a daisy in a desert
under the merciless sun
parched of its living water
singed of its white purity
vapourized with scattered winds
denied a resting place on earth
fire that nurtures
fire that kills
an uncontrolled wildfire
extends its deathly grasp
north and south
east and west
all four corners of the world
will burn
with children victim to their vulnerabilities
and fire setters to their mistaken justices:
a life for life
a death for death
from there young shoots are set alight
baked and shrivelled to mere ashes
restoring the earth with dead love
which from its cradle no love grows
even a daughter of water
may sizzle in the blaze
so only God can save
kız çocuğu

The Imagery

a scorching desert
fire, fire, fire
a burnt pit where plants no longer grow

The Content

As you can tell I am a fan of FazıI Say. I wrote this a while back, in September probably. Thinking not only of war, but of the deadliness of human fire.

Natural fires, whether, seasonal or volcanic, restore the Earth and bring new life after the destruction. But war fire leaves a singe that impoverishes and does not heal quickly enough. It is no natural fire but a synthetic fire, such as the one that bombed Hiroshima. And unlike natural fires in which the dead are returned to the earth, the atomic bomb simply vapourized the dead. There was not a trace of dignity left for the deceased. War fire is like radioactive radiation in the sense that nothing grows in the aftermath.

I thought the line "and fire setters to their mistaken justices" was particularly intriguing. It seems that I side with Mencius (the Eastern counterpart of John Locke) on the matter of human nature, preferring to describe violent impulses as bad mistakes that came from good intentions.

Spring Nicht

First find out about introspective.

for the breeze is gentle
and the scent is soft
the spring has only just come
a bud on the heights
the night has only just passed
a sunrise on the horizon
but to miss hope around the corner
give in to gravity over the edge
and fall vacant into the abyss
where the spring is withheld
where the night is eternal
where surrender is the last surrender
so vulnerably
with just a moment of chill
before spring night
the icicles hurt, they did
needles of denial
drips of doubt
the splinters crushed, they did
shards of affection
slivers of endearment
the precious dream marred
from end to end
when it has hardly begun
so why shatter it further
so why cripple it further
to make it true
hold on for dear life
and God forbid
do not jump

The Imagery

breezy twilight on the heights
warm glow in the distance
dark depths
fractured cold ice

The Content

This entry was written in August. It is based on a wordplay between "spring nicht" and "spring night", in which the former actually means "do not jump". Looking back, this piece is more dramatic than I realize.

Maybe you all be worried at this dark theme, but it is my form of optimism. My favourite sections are "but to miss hope around the corner.. where surrender is the last surrender" and "the precious dream marred" onwards. The former tells the consequences, and the latter gives incentive to hold on. "And God forbid, do not jump"!

As you can tell by now, the cold really bothers me. I love getting cozy on a cold night, but without a source of warmth it is just plain depressing. At the time I was writing this I had a mild trauma psychologically conditioned with cold nights; just thinking about cold nights got me anxious. It no longer bothers me anymore but that is a story I would rather leave alone.

Caresse sur l'océan

First find out about introspective.

caresse sur l’océan
tenderly carry my luve and his luvess
on forth to an expanse of sea and sky
to where the moon is the colour of honey
as they cruise in bliss
a guardian battles the elements
donning cuirass and dress
with spear and petal in hand
to watch over their ship on wings of vigilance
tho’ it were ten thousand mile
to fill their sails with streams of blessing
’til a’ the seas gang dry
I will luve thee still my dear
still as the reservoir in my heart
be it now or then
may my luve and his luvess
caress on the ocean

The Imagery

The soft sea.
A sailing ship.
A guardian.

The Content

This entry is extremely short, but it has given sufficient context. Many references to A Red, Red Rose by the Scottish bard Robert Burns (which I got to sing a version by Rene Clausen at a choir festival).

The actual chronological order in which I wrote this "sea series" is Letting Go, Sea Song, Caresse sur l'océan, written mid October, mid November, and mid December respectively. Each entry was conceived independently. I swear the matching themes are coincidental. Perhaps this is the very wonder of my introspective project, finding things about myself that I otherwise would not have noticed. These little capsules of preserved thoughts may not be much by themselves, but it appears profound in the bigger picture.

Those months were crucial to me in the lifelong run. I finally got myself over this stumbling block and readjusted my motivations. We kids think we are mature, but it is with realizations such as these that prove us wrong. How wrong I was! And I suspect this story is not over yet. Just a little feeling that there is one more thing I have yet to learn from this..

I cannot promise that I will not write about the sea again. It comes back to me all the time.

Letting Go

First find out about introspective.

Chronological order: Letting Go, Sea Song, Caresse sur l'océan

of what never was
the first word
the final glance
all a dream
but the sorrow is real
to bask in a glow
that meant naught
every breath
gone over the hills
wondering if this brine
can ever be sweet
for the red die
and the green wilt
the aftermath of saline intimacy
drains blue to a grizzle
return, daughter of salt
to the ocean’s embrace
sands may crumble
but the seas will never dry
the plains you love so much
they are no more
the cliffs you love so much
they are no more
let the waves nourish
your diluted veins
as a free spirit leap up high
and as sea foam on the rocks
let go

The Imagery

Salt.
Animals and plants dwindle away.
Blue fades to grey.
Return from land to sea.
Sea foam sloshing off the rocks.

The Content

Another sea themed entry, comparable to Sea Song and contrastable to Caresse sur l'océan. This piece is particularly ambiguous, but if you consider the connotations I associate with certain symbols it will be clearer.

I would very much rather have you make the connections yourself. An excess of words will break the magic.

Sea Song

First find out about introspective.

Chronological order: Letting Go, Sea Song, Caresse sur l'océan

sea song
singing a shanty
gently tugging at my ankles
calling me home
how far had I drifted
to forget my Father
vast and deep
waiting with an open embrace
the shore whispers
words of wisdom
guiding me to whence I came
the waves
crests and troughs
reach for whence He came
how far had I strayed
to forget my faith
steady and true
resting in my heart’s trenches
the waters overflow
vessels of flesh
purifying my past evils
the salts
grains and crystals
season my harsh speech
the ocean blue
a sea of song
sings of homecoming
off the sand
over the foam
through the rolls
into the sea
you waded out

The Imagery

An expanse of sea.
Home.
Receive. Nurture. Cleanse.
Wading out.

The Content

This is my most recent entry as of now, from some time in October. Now that I am spending my weekend in Hua Hin, it feels fit for sharing.

I have not seen the ocean in ages. When I used to live in Rayong it was so natural for me to see it every weekend. For me the sea symbolizes home and where I came from. This should clarify many other sea references.

Shoes

First find out about introspective.

shoes
try before buy
but I disapprove
because shoes wear out
shoes to last a lifetime
but a pair will not last
without treating it like a last
any thought of forfeit
is to end the walk before it began
and so any amount of trialling
is futile
people are abandoned, betrayed,
worn out
some shattered after fragile age
some broken in bold primes
some deflowered before tender youth
all robbed of a glorious heritage
now spattered with shadows
over skin and sole
the earthly mud of mankind
that defiled
a shoe

The Imagery

Shoe shop.
Walking a pair of shoes.
Muddy shoes.

The Content

This is one of my early entries, probably my second. I am digging this out now to complement my current mood.

What do I know about marriage, or relationships even? True, what do I know? But divorce rates are higher than ever, and all this freedom and adolescent experience has done nothing to improve. Rather, what it seems to do is teach us to flee from commitment. While divorce may be the smarter choice in some cases, a smart choice certainly was not made in the beginning.

A common approach to establishing relationships is to try it. Dive straight in. To bed. Maybe not as immediately as I have exaggerated, but it does happen a lot. Supposedly relationships are a trial and error thing that needs to be tested, but are people not more than shoes? People do get hurt from the end of an intimacy. It is like applying superglue between two people and tearing them apart, and each person dies a little more..

Break In

First find out about introspective.

through this fortification
a tessellation of anxiety
a defence against itself
the heart invaded after nightfall
frightening echoes
worst fears confirmed
penetrating to the very core
of confidentiality
of buried shame
in fact a liberator
the heart mended before sunrise
gentle words
make me whole
reassembling the broken pieces
of grace
of forgotten charm
in truth a scalpel
remove all festers
dislodge all burdens
rebuild this internal kingdom
so that no other mortal
breaks in

The Imagery

Overnight invasion on a castle.
Healing.
Rebuilding the damage.

The Content

Not that anyone has dug me up in such a way before. But I wish very much that someone would. But I wish even more that no one would. Which is why no one has. Which is why the walls are even there in the first place.

I have not considered why that is. The first half is unwilling to let anyone in, and the second half is relieved that someone came around. Indeed, why? Because two cannot keep a secret? Because I have trust issues? Maybe it has something to do with my evilness (refer to Aşk).

The most likely reason is probably that I do not communicate clearly enough. Or quickly enough. For clarity I must compensate with speed, and for speed with clarity, so I can never have both. And people are usually not patient enough to wait half an hour before I finally string the right words together. Not that I expect anyone to. That would be insane.

So I fabricated the second half? Ya, I pretty much did. I imagine that the treatment would hurt at first, but that it would be liberating in a way I have never known.

At the very end I specify "mortals" since God is always allowed in. Always allowed.

Aşk

First find out about introspective.

suspended over the lake
a torn penumbra
lingering lost
hunched towards the depths
where untold fears
gloomily gaze back
through the opaque veil
a subconsciousness that abhors
warmth and illumination
and so hides in the dark deep
chasing shades
all things bright and beautiful
flit overhead
while the swan
on the blurry waterline
stranded on the edge
of submergence
and flight
of hatred
and love

The Imagery

Swan on a lake.
Birds in bright skies.
Creatures in dark waters.

The Content

If you have read the introspective post and considered the last line of this piece, you can deduce that "aşk" means "love". It is, and it is in fact Turkish.

This is one of my heavier entries. The mood is indeed gloomy. It is about choosing between right and wrong. I find it interesting that I focus more on the darker side than the brighter side. It seems that I am very conscious about keeping corruption at bay.

People have no idea how evil I can be deep down. I know about it, and yet I cannot get rid of it. Some days I feel optimistic about the battle, but other days I just want to be the meanest, most selfish, unforgiving person.

All this is pretty dark for a piece titled "love". Maybe for me the meaning of love is to overcome all that. That is what makes love so great. To love without overcoming hatred is no feat, whereas loving despite the hatred is the epitome of love.

Hush Hush

First find out about introspective.

make no sound
barely breathing
blanched and pale
pieces of distress
drop gentle
flutter about the pillow
curled and withdrawn
save them until dawn
for there are still distances
to fly
so stir no more
ask none
and worry even less
lightly sweep
the feathers shod
away under the mattress
then smooth out
the creeks and valleys
from sheets and foreheads
and close the soul’s window
for it has had enough
of tonight
hush

The Imagery

Bedtime.
Pale bird shedding feathers.
Eye / window.

The Content

I do not know what vibe this piece gives off to the average audience, but I think it is rather soothing than depressing. The beginning is bleak, but the rest is encouraging. Being emotionally strong is not about preaching sunshine and rainbows, but it is rather about climbing out of the lows. After a stressful day.. stop worrying and go to sleep! There is another day to get through tomorrow~

And why a bird instead of a human? A bird shedding feathers is more endearing than some random person shedding hair, I should think.

You will notice that a lot of my entries are set at night. During the day at school there is no peace and privacy. The afternoon is reserved for priorities, mostly homework. Then comes evening and night, the perfect window for writing. It is a relaxing yet productive way to recharge after a long day. I also find that keeping occupied is a great way for me to keep from entertaining stupid thoughts.. such as those few minutes before falling asleep. Better to write than to recount my life story.

My favourite phrase has to be "close the soul’s window for it has had enough of tonight". I can just imagine some bad weather outside and a terrible cacophony of noise, then finally closing the shutters. Get some eye shut, deary.

Gentle

First find out about introspective.

gentle
the cold I know so well
ethereal touch
cool droplets on grey skin
numb but delightful
lost in a dreamy stupour
indifferent but reassuring
make believe
that the moon glows
not to my comment
but to me
that the night lends
more than its cloak
but its passion
a sweet rainy dew
sweeter more in the wind
with whispers to the heart
where secrets lie asleep
in a chilled chamber
softly aware of a knocking
on the bolted door
that just might
let in
the gentle

The Imagery

Nighttime after a soft rain, with a light breeze.
Grey skin in contact with water droplets.
Personified moon and night.
A locked, somewhat cryogenic compartment.

How random can this get.

The Content

Conveniently it is raining gently as I am writing this post, as it was when I wrote that piece. What I love most about the rain is a decreased atmospheric pressure. It makes me feel " less firmly grounded to the earth". It allows me to escape my body (figuratively) for a while and tend to my emotional state.

The mood in this piece is not as simple as a happy or sad. I am rarely ever happy or sad. But I can say that the tone transitions from amused, to wistful, to reticent. Okay, but why? I bring up something amusing, describe it wistfully, and then clam shut.

I am often reluctant to share what truly matters to me. I can try, only to trail off into an inaudible mumble.

There is not much to say about this. Being one of my early pieces, it is not expanded to its fullest potential. I do like the personifications very much though. Or maybe it is just me being wistful.

Introspective

Lately my blog content has been all over the place. It started off being informative, but then I could not resist adding inspirational and instructional (there is also an interludial coming around the corner.. wait to see what it is).

My newest addition is the introspective. I have no idea who is reading this (or if anyone is reading this at all) but I think that there are some ideas worth sharing. Like the word suggests, introspective is about me. Self examination. This idea came from a new style of writing I came up with over the past two or three months. As of now I have ten entries, some of which borrow from songs and pieces. Now that I look back through these writings, I notice things about myself that I would have otherwise overlooked.

I am not sure what to call these writings. Some might say they are poems. Perhaps they are. All I know is that there is no specific purpose or audience. One day I just thought it would be fun to put some thoughts down in words. And it was fun. There is no other reason for doing it.

At a glance my work looks rather peculiar with my so called "style", so I might as well explain the artistry. One key idea to keep in mind is that the format imitates my thought process. These grammatical abominations seem like phoney baloney but trust me, I do know the rules. In contemporary arts people break rules to achieve an effect, and they must know the rules first before they know how to break rules. Same here:

Lowercase Letters

You will notice that I write entirely in lowercase. I might capitalize some nouns, but that will be it. Capital letters is a very Latin concept. Many languages do without it so I say, it does not hurt to trade it for effect. More importantly, it ties in with my "thought process imitation" in that there are no capital letters to mark beginnings of sentences. Thoughts are often one continuous flow (have you ever caught yourself thinking about absolutely nothing at all?) and writing everything in lowercase helps express the fluidity of my irresolute mind. One cannot keep track of time in deep contemplation. It is one tumbling stream.

Lack of Punctuation

The lack of punctuation has a similar effect to lowercase letters in fluidity, as described above. What about question marks, surely I will need them? Actually, questions in my mind are half statements. This is one of my quirky characteristics. Often times I will "ask" myself but not expect an answer. Another effect is that if you come across an exclamation mark, you will know not to take it lightly. It is for real!

There may be a comma or two to clear up interpretations such as the classic "let's eat grandma" example. As long as I am pleased with the customized specificity / ambiguity, punctuation has fulfilled its purpose. Any more is redundant. In fact punctuation is not universal among languages (testifying with Archaic Chinese here) since the context usually makes it clear enough.

Sentence Fragments

This is where the greatest confusion steps in, but this is exactly how my mind works. It throws some concepts around, a lot of which are not complete. Fragments. Some ideas do not have the chance to fully develop before another one butts in. The fragments are split into lines, although not strictly. There is a lot more to explore with how you interpret the stanza divisions. Meanings can differ drastically yet make sense at the same time. I use parallel structure a lot (maybe I had too much Tang poetry) which can give you some clues to finding order in the madness.

If you read some more, you will find that I sometimes defy parts of speech. That is also the way my mind works. Maybe it is due to bilingualism and my overlapping of Chinese and English concepts. In the unworded stage of my ideas when concepts are just floating around, grammar does not apply. At that point there is no language distinction.

A frequent strategy I employ is to end with what I began with. The last line is usually a similar form of the first line. It brings the piece back to full circle and encourages the audience to read again. It takes a couple reads through to perceive

A teacher of mine said that there is something "poetic" about my writing. Last year we kept journals in which we answer a writing prompt, usually in the form of a question. Nonetheless I turn it into a work on its own, with its own title and theme. Even then I loved to write in lowercase, omit punctuation, fragment sentences, and skip lines. It was an experimental stage for what I have now.

I find that my writing process is a lot like my speaking process. Wording, wording, wording! I use the thesaurus aggressively, not to apply random jargon, but to convey my idea exactly along with its essence. For me diction is a central part to poetry. It is a precarious weight to a balance, or a delicate seasoning to a dish. Frequency. Variety. Originality. So much to take into account. This is possibly why I am such a slow speaker. I spend so much time constructing the perfect wording.

My introspective posts attempt to rediscover myself with this quote:

"But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart," - Matthew 15:18 (the rest of the verse being "and these defile them". We will see whether I have something lurking inside).

The words I write, as well as spoken, are indeed from the heart. A person has to care enough to voice something, or in my case to write. Now that you know what is going on with the introspective posts, I hope you will not get too lost.
